Multispectral Imaging: Catching Disease Before It Spreads
The human eye sees three bands of light: red, green, and blue. Plants, however, communicate their health in a spectrum far beyond what we can see. Healthy plants absorb red and blue light to power photosynthesis, but they strongly reflect Near-Infrared (NIR) light, a spectrum completely invisible to the naked eye.
When a plant experiences stress from pests, disease, drought, or nutrient deficiency, its cellular structure begins to break down. As that happens, its NIR reflectance drops drastically. It is a distress signal broadcast across the entire field, visible only to the right sensor.
Our veteran pilots fly automated, precision grid missions using professional 5-band multispectral sensors (the MicaSense RedEdge-P). These sensors measure exact light variations across every crop row and convert the data into color-coded vegetation index maps, pinpointing the precise coordinates of crop stress weeks before a single leaf turns yellow.
Deep Dive
Understanding NDVI Maps
NDVI, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, is the most widely used measure of plant health on earth. It works by calculating the ratio between NIR reflectance and red light absorption using a simple formula:
NDVI = (NIR − Red) ÷ (NIR + Red)
The result is a value between -1 and +1. Dense, healthy vegetation scores between +0.6 and +0.9. Sparse or stressed vegetation scores between +0.2 and +0.5. Bare soil, water, and dead plant matter score near 0 or below.
Our NDVI maps translate these values into a color gradient, typically deep green for healthy zones and bright red for stressed zones, overlaid on a GPS-accurate map of your field. The result is an actionable intelligence report that tells you exactly where to look, what to treat, and how much product to apply. No guesswork. No wasted inputs.
Vegetation Indices We Deploy:
NDVI — Normalized Difference Vegetation Index
The gold standard of crop health measurement. NDVI compares NIR reflectance against red light absorption to produce a value between -1 and +1. Healthy, dense crops score near +1. Stressed, dying, or bare soil scores near 0 or below. Our NDVI maps color-code every square foot of your field so problem zones are impossible to miss, weeks before they are visible to the naked eye.
GNDVI — Green NDVI
Uses green light instead of red to measure chlorophyll content and nitrogen stress. Particularly effective for corn and soybeans, where nitrogen deficiency is a leading cause of yield loss. GNDVI catches the problem early enough to act.
NDRE — Normalized Difference Red Edge
The most sensitive early-warning index available. NDRE detects subtle changes in the red-edge spectrum, the narrow band where plant reflectance transitions from red to NIR. It identifies nitrogen deficiency and early-stage disease stress before NDVI even registers a change.
SAVI — Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index
In early-season or sparse canopy fields, bare soil can skew NDVI readings. SAVI applies a correction factor that removes soil background noise, giving you accurate plant health data even when the canopy is not yet fully closed.

An orthomosaic is a geometrically corrected aerial image stitched together from hundreds of individual drone photographs.
